Are Moldova and Ukraine about to break up?

Hello, and welcome to Rapporteur PM.

From the capital:

It was said en passant.

“I really see that we could have at least two or three new member states by 2030 – if they deliver,” Marta Kos, the EU’s enlargement chief, told a room of half-awake MEPs this morning.

Two or three. Montenegro and Albania are obviously the first two she had in mind. But the third one?

So far, Ukraine and Moldova have had their respective bids for EU membership joined at the hip since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Just today, EU countries tentatively agreed to open two new negotiation clusters with both, after Hungary dropped its veto on Ukraine's bid.

And yet, behind closed doors, the mood is changing. EU diplomats I spoke to said that separating Moldova’s bid from Ukraine’s is seen not as a question of if, but when.

“Nobody serious believes Ukraine will be a member of the EU by the end of the decade, if ever, and we...

Letters to The Guardian

George your ability to read the Western Press without tearing your hair out is incredible. Occasionally I'll buy The Guardian to see how bad it is, and usually send off A Letter to see if .... and no, they never print it. So, gagglers here is my latest missive. Maybe the last ...
Dear Letters
There is a Ukrainian expression "Зима не за горами" (pronounced Zyma ne za horamy), which translates as "Winter is not beyond the mountains." In everyday language, it simply means "Winter is just around the corner" or "Winter is coming soon." And any objective observer of the tragedy of the war in Ukraine should feel most urgently the need for diplomacy given the coming winter in that country. Yet your Opinion writer Rajan Menon (Putin is betting on Ukraine caving in over winter. It won't, Opinion, 5 October) across two columns reiterates the now universal Western call to arms and further arms. In this short piece the author makes no fewer that sixteen ...

More Leftie Than Thou
"Jacobin" Magazine Celebrates A Strike Against Ol' Blue Eyes

Here at "The Gaggle" we have very little time for the "more Leftie than thou" school of thought--that's the approach to life according to which the only thing that matters is whether you take the right position on every issue under the sun from Abortion to Zelensky. No one in the world meets the exacting standards of this school of thought; any Leftie leader anywhere is always selling out to the bankers and the capitalists. The perfect exemplar of this is the unreadable Jacobin magazine.

The other day I came across this article from 2021. It's a celebration of trade union power. And not simply trade union power, but the use of trade union power to secure political goals. Of course (and this is always the case with the "more Leftie than thou" crowd), this glorious, never-to-be-forgotten moment on the history of organized labor took place many years ago--in the summer of 1974 to be exact. Yes, almost half a century has gone by since that thrilling moment when the working-class movement of Australia mobilized and prepared to seize the means of production, distribution and exchange.

Well, not quite. Organized labor went into action against...Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice; yes, Frank Sinatra. Why? What had Sinatra done? Sinatra was certainly very rich, and he owned a variety of properties and businesses. But if the Australian trade union movement were, understandably, searching for the bright, incandescent spark that would finally awaken the working class from its slumber there were surely richer, greedier, more dishonest, more decadent, above all more Australian individuals it could have discovered. Australia was never short of them. Rupert Murdoch immediately springs to mind. Why Sinatra?
