Alekseev Assassination Attempt Reveals Russian Security Service Cracks

Alex Horobets

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Federal Security Service (FSB) to strengthen protection for key military figures following an assassination attempt on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, the first deputy head of Russia’s military intelligence service (GRU) in February.

The Kremlin used the assassination attempt to promote the narrative of “Ukrainian terrorism,” creating an opportunity to present any internal elite confrontations as Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) operations.

The incident strengthens the “party of war” in Russia and can be used as an instrument of pressure on peace negotiations, justifying Moscow’s rhetoric of escalation. It is a demonstration that the war against Ukraine has long since extended beyond the front line.

Russia Demands Georgia Restore Rail Traffic Through Abkhazia

Giorgi Menabde

Executive Summary:

Moscow once again demanded that Tbilisi consider resuming rail traffic from Russia through Abkhazia to Georgia, Armenia, and Iran. Russia has raised this issue for more than 30 years, since the end of the conflict in Abkhazia in 1993.

The ruling Georgian Dream party refuses to discuss this project, fearing political repercussions. Reopening traffic through Abkhazia would force Tbilisi to recognize the border between Georgia and Abkhazia as a “state” border for customs clearance purposes.

Russia has returned to discussing a railway through Abkhazia, likely in response to the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP)—a route connecting Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia—that threatens to weaken Russia’s influence in the South Caucasus.

Saudi Arabia’s Outreach to Central Asia Grows

Emil Avdaliani

Executive Summary:

On February 18, Kazakh Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev paid an official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss developing political dialogue, expanding trade, economic cooperation, and cultural and humanitarian ties.

The visit is illustrative of the growing ties between Saudi Arabia and Central Asia, in which Riyadh is particularly interested in tapping into shifting connectivity in the heart of Eurasia, especially with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Burgeoning Saudi Arabia–Central Asia ties illustrate how middle powers increasingly shape regional order, operating through flexible partnerships rather than rigid blocs and challenging the assumption that great powers will dominate post-Soviet Central Asian geopolitics.

This conflict could become regional, with multiple actors involved. We are getting close to a large-scale war.

More Leftie Than Thou
"Jacobin" Magazine Celebrates A Strike Against Ol' Blue Eyes

Here at "The Gaggle" we have very little time for the "more Leftie than thou" school of thought--that's the approach to life according to which the only thing that matters is whether you take the right position on every issue under the sun from Abortion to Zelensky. No one in the world meets the exacting standards of this school of thought; any Leftie leader anywhere is always selling out to the bankers and the capitalists. The perfect exemplar of this is the unreadable Jacobin magazine.

The other day I came across this article from 2021. It's a celebration of trade union power. And not simply trade union power, but the use of trade union power to secure political goals. Of course (and this is always the case with the "more Leftie than thou" crowd), this glorious, never-to-be-forgotten moment on the history of organized labor took place many years ago--in the summer of 1974 to be exact. Yes, almost half a century has gone by since that thrilling moment when the working-class movement of Australia mobilized and prepared to seize the means of production, distribution and exchange.

Well, not quite. Organized labor went into action against...Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice; yes, Frank Sinatra. Why? What had Sinatra done? Sinatra was certainly very rich, and he owned a variety of properties and businesses. But if the Australian trade union movement were, understandably, searching for the bright, incandescent spark that would finally awaken the working class from its slumber there were surely richer, greedier, more dishonest, more decadent, above all more Australian individuals it could have discovered. Australia was never short of them. Rupert Murdoch immediately springs to mind. Why Sinatra?
