Moscow Worried by Rise of Pan-Turkism Across Central Asia

Paul Goble

Executive Summary:

A new pan-Turkism is on the rise across Central Asia amid increased cooperation among the Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan’s joining them, thereby tilting the balance toward the Turkic peoples and serving as a bridge to Türkiye itself.

Moscow is alarmed because this makes it more difficult than ever before for the Russian authorities or indeed anyone else, including new competitors such as the People’s Republic of China, to play the divide-and-rule politics long deployed by outsiders to try to dominate that region.

Pan-Turkism is likely, in the short term, to do more to promote unity among Central Asia and between them and Azerbaijan than any major increase in Türkiye’s role there or against Russia as such.

Ukrainian Military Offers Lessons Learned to NATO (Part Three)

Taras Kuzio

Executive Summary:

Russia’s war against Ukraine has shown how drones are reshaping warfare. Drone-saturated battlefields complicate medical evacuation and care, forcing the adoption of ground drones for logistics, casualty extraction, and frontline support under persistent aerial threats.

Ukraine’s drone manufacturing industry has rapidly grown, producing first-person view (FPV), bomber, interceptor, and AI-enabled systems at scale. Kyiv favors rapidly produced, low-cost weapons over expensive, slow-to-develop systems. Mass production and quick replacement are essential in an attritional conflict.

Artillery remains useful in Ukraine, while tanks and armored vehicles are increasingly vulnerable to strikes by inexpensive drones. Expensive Western systems often underperform compared to cheaper Ukrainian alternatives.

Middle Corridor Makes Progress Toward Operational Reality

Sertaç Canalp Korkmaz

Executive Summary:

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) is rapidly expanding as an alternative to Russia’s Northern Corridor amid rising cargo volumes and coordinated international investment in infrastructure and digitalization.

Countries in Central Asia and the South Caucasus are advancing connectivity through major infrastructure projects such as the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway and the Port of Alat amid increased involvement from Europe and the People’s Republic of China.

The TITR has transitioned from an aspiration to an operational reality, but without addressing unresolved issues in its development, it will struggle to maintain structural stability amid increased transport volumes.

The current Moldovan govt keeps bringing up the topic of reunification with Romania.

Moldovan President Sandu is reportedly advised to speak about reunification to foreign media, but then backtracks when questioned about it by Moldovan journalists.

Three points on this topic should be kept in mind:

There is only about 30% support for reunification in Moldova.

  • Sandu and her party are instrumentalizing this topic to consolidate their core voters and to distract attention from numerous domestic scandals, including alleged links to organized crime involving the police.

  • If such a scenario were to be implemented, Moldova would come as a package deal with the Transnistrian conflict. This would mean that Romania (and by extension NATO) would take the place of Moldova in any future format of this Russia-involved frozen conflict.

More Leftie Than Thou
"Jacobin" Magazine Celebrates A Strike Against Ol' Blue Eyes

Here at "The Gaggle" we have very little time for the "more Leftie than thou" school of thought--that's the approach to life according to which the only thing that matters is whether you take the right position on every issue under the sun from Abortion to Zelensky. No one in the world meets the exacting standards of this school of thought; any Leftie leader anywhere is always selling out to the bankers and the capitalists. The perfect exemplar of this is the unreadable Jacobin magazine.

The other day I came across this article from 2021. It's a celebration of trade union power. And not simply trade union power, but the use of trade union power to secure political goals. Of course (and this is always the case with the "more Leftie than thou" crowd), this glorious, never-to-be-forgotten moment on the history of organized labor took place many years ago--in the summer of 1974 to be exact. Yes, almost half a century has gone by since that thrilling moment when the working-class movement of Australia mobilized and prepared to seize the means of production, distribution and exchange.

Well, not quite. Organized labor went into action against...Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice; yes, Frank Sinatra. Why? What had Sinatra done? Sinatra was certainly very rich, and he owned a variety of properties and businesses. But if the Australian trade union movement were, understandably, searching for the bright, incandescent spark that would finally awaken the working class from its slumber there were surely richer, greedier, more dishonest, more decadent, above all more Australian individuals it could have discovered. Australia was never short of them. Rupert Murdoch immediately springs to mind. Why Sinatra?
