Sweden is creating a new civilian foreign intelligence agency, UND, modeled on Britain's MI6 after its military intelligence misjudged Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The new agency will focus on political and strategic intelligence, reflecting a broader European push to strengthen independent intelligence capabilities amid growing security threats and uncertainty over U.S. support.

Finland to cut off part of Russia's foreign internet traffic

Finland will stop maintaining power line poles used by telecom operators starting in 2027, Kommersant reports. After electricity exports from Russia ended in 2022, maintaining the infrastructure solely for telecom companies became economically unviable.

Up to 30% of Russia's communication links with Finland run along these power lines, while Finland currently carries an estimated 60–70% of Russia's international internet traffic.

A change of tenant at Downing Street, and the question of whether personnel changes ever amount to policy changes. Andy Burnham arrives with capped bus fares, TikTok fluency and a studied silence on Ukraine — and Finian Cunningham argues that the silence is the point. On his reading, Starmer was not removed for failing; he was removed for hesitating, caught between the establishment's demand for tens of billions in new military spending and the public services that money would have to come out of. Burnham, by his own account not squeamish about that trade, was installed to make it. The conversation turns on where power actually sits in the new cabinet. Cunningham's case is that it sits with John Healey at the Exchequer, not with Ed Miliband at the Foreign Office or Wes ...

Is Libya safer than Russia now?

Libya has proposed that Russia build an oil refinery on its territory in order to sell gasoline from there.

“We have proposed that the Russian side consider the possibility of building oil refineries in Libya. These refineries would allow the Russian side to trade petroleum products from Libyan territory rather than from Russia,” said Investment Minister Ali al-Qaidi.

It should be noted that this North African country still does not have a stable unified government — it is de facto divided between areas of influence controlled by various armed groups.

More Leftie Than Thou
"Jacobin" Magazine Celebrates A Strike Against Ol' Blue Eyes

Here at "The Gaggle" we have very little time for the "more Leftie than thou" school of thought--that's the approach to life according to which the only thing that matters is whether you take the right position on every issue under the sun from Abortion to Zelensky. No one in the world meets the exacting standards of this school of thought; any Leftie leader anywhere is always selling out to the bankers and the capitalists. The perfect exemplar of this is the unreadable Jacobin magazine.

The other day I came across this article from 2021. It's a celebration of trade union power. And not simply trade union power, but the use of trade union power to secure political goals. Of course (and this is always the case with the "more Leftie than thou" crowd), this glorious, never-to-be-forgotten moment on the history of organized labor took place many years ago--in the summer of 1974 to be exact. Yes, almost half a century has gone by since that thrilling moment when the working-class movement of Australia mobilized and prepared to seize the means of production, distribution and exchange.

Well, not quite. Organized labor went into action against...Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice; yes, Frank Sinatra. Why? What had Sinatra done? Sinatra was certainly very rich, and he owned a variety of properties and businesses. But if the Australian trade union movement were, understandably, searching for the bright, incandescent spark that would finally awaken the working class from its slumber there were surely richer, greedier, more dishonest, more decadent, above all more Australian individuals it could have discovered. Australia was never short of them. Rupert Murdoch immediately springs to mind. Why Sinatra?
