TG 2199: Trump, Musk, Zelensky & The Starlink-Go-Round

George Szamuely and Peter Lavelle discuss the strange, baffling story of the supposed Ukrainian cutoff from use of the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems. Did it happen and, if so, what was behind it?

TG 2198: Witkoff in St. Petersburg: Peace In Ukraine Nowhere In Sight

George Szamuely discusses today's visit to St. Petersburg by presidential envoy Steve Witkoff to meet President Putin. The meeting, other than the release of U.S. prisoner Stephen Hubbard, yielded few results--certainly no progress on bringing the war in Ukraine to an end.

Ukrainians keep showing enormous courage in defending their country against Putin’s immoral and indeed evil efforts to conquer a neighbor. They have resisted now for four years and eight months and we should do all we can to help

NEW!! In a letter to Trump, Republican Congressman Kean urges him to “fully implement Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, provide unthrottled access to Starlink defensive capabilities, and authorize Ukrainian licensure to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles”

Hahahaha

Ukraine says the speed restrictions on Starlink’s military service Starshield have been lifted, ending nearly 11 days of limits, according to the Financial Times. Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara said the ministry’s monitoring recorded a recovery in speeds, with drones able to fly faster than 400 km/h on a “stable connection.” Zelenskyy said the restrictions were lifted overnight. Units had reported connection problems above about 130 km/h and a complete loss of signal above 160 km/h hindering Ukraine's offensive and defensive capabilities.

On Saturday, Elon Musk accused Ukraine’s military of violating Starlink’s terms of service by using the commercial system for “offensive drone strikes to kill people,” writing on X “That loophole was closed last week.” Several Ukrainian officials denied it, saying their drones use Starshield, which Musk has said the U.S. government controls. Presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said commercial terminals in Ukraine have been ...

In this in-depth discussion, Alexander Grable presents the findings from his paper Irretrievable Losses: Estimating Casualties on the Russo-Ukraine War, published by the Finnish National Defense University. Drawing on confirmed official data — including body exchanges, amputee figures, and cross-checked registries — he challenges the widespread claim that Russian casualties substantially exceed Ukrainian ones. The evidence points in the opposite direction: Ukrainian losses are far higher, with a ratio of at least ten times more Ukrainian dead than Russian. Importantly, this ten-times figure represents the lower end of the estimates drawn from confirmed like-for-like data, with some categories (such as amputees) indicating substantially higher multiples. More Leftie Than Thou
"Jacobin" Magazine Celebrates A Strike Against Ol' Blue Eyes

Here at "The Gaggle" we have very little time for the "more Leftie than thou" school of thought--that's the approach to life according to which the only thing that matters is whether you take the right position on every issue under the sun from Abortion to Zelensky. No one in the world meets the exacting standards of this school of thought; any Leftie leader anywhere is always selling out to the bankers and the capitalists. The perfect exemplar of this is the unreadable Jacobin magazine.

The other day I came across this article from 2021. It's a celebration of trade union power. And not simply trade union power, but the use of trade union power to secure political goals. Of course (and this is always the case with the "more Leftie than thou" crowd), this glorious, never-to-be-forgotten moment on the history of organized labor took place many years ago--in the summer of 1974 to be exact. Yes, almost half a century has gone by since that thrilling moment when the working-class movement of Australia mobilized and prepared to seize the means of production, distribution and exchange.

Well, not quite. Organized labor went into action against...Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice; yes, Frank Sinatra. Why? What had Sinatra done? Sinatra was certainly very rich, and he owned a variety of properties and businesses. But if the Australian trade union movement were, understandably, searching for the bright, incandescent spark that would finally awaken the working class from its slumber there were surely richer, greedier, more dishonest, more decadent, above all more Australian individuals it could have discovered. Australia was never short of them. Rupert Murdoch immediately springs to mind. Why Sinatra?
