Lab-Leak Theory Could Lead to New Upsurge of Populism

Though cowardly and equivocal in tone, this column by Thomas Frank does raise an interesting issue. For some 18 months, the moral of the Covid story had been that we should trust science, scientists and the data. The villains of the story were the ignoramuses led by Trump who refuse to give due deference to people much smarter than they are.

But what if the story is the exact reverse? What if the villains of the story the scientists themselves? If the lab-leak theory turns out to be true, then attention will inevitably turn to the scientists who conduct dangerous experiments without taking proper safety precautions that would protect the public that actually pays their salaries. Attention would turn to scientists carrying out gain-of-function experiments, the exact purpose of which remains murky, to say the least. Most important of all, attention would turn to the scientists who not only concealed all of this from the public for 18 months but also put out a story that they knew to be false, namely, that the Covid virus had a natural origin. The scientists are not only reckless and incompetent, they are deceitful. And the long-suffering public has had to pay the price.

All of this is a little reminiscent of 2008. The financial crisis was the work of the supposed wizard financiers who were far smarter than everyone else. However, the price for their recklessness had to be paid for by the dumb, ignorant public. The 2008 debacle led to the rise of the contemporary populist movement. 2020 seemed for a while to be a resounding defeat for that populist movement. The experts, the smart guys, the safe pairs of hands were back in control. Well, it looks as if their return to power may turn out to be evanescent.

Dear Gagglers:

Monday is, and has always been, a profoundly depressing day. That's why we have decided to add a little bit of fun to it.

On Monday, Jan. 5, we are holding another film screening. Gagglers can watch a movie and, as they do so, offer comments, random thoughts, aesthetic observations and critical insights in the Live Chat.

We will be screening the winner of The Gaggle's "Kings, Queens, Royalty and the Courts" poll: Franklin J. Schaffner's Oscar-winning "Nicholas and Alexandra," starring Janet Suzman.

The geopolitical advantage of Venezuela:

As we outline below, Venezuela holds BILLIONS of barrels of heavy crude oil.

Who else holds large amounts of heavy crude oil? Russia.

Who is the largest IMPORTER of Venezuelan crude oil? China.

In fact, ~5% of China's annual crude oil imports are sourced from Venezuela.

And, who has some of the largest HEAVY crude oil refineries in the world? The US.

It is no coincidence that President Trump said "China is going to get oil" during his press conference yesterday.

The US controlling Venezuela provides strategic geopolitical leverage over both China and Russia.

This is not a coincidence. https://x.com/KobeissiLetter/status/2007856298570707430?s=20

More Leftie Than Thou
"Jacobin" Magazine Celebrates A Strike Against Ol' Blue Eyes

Here at "The Gaggle" we have very little time for the "more Leftie than thou" school of thought--that's the approach to life according to which the only thing that matters is whether you take the right position on every issue under the sun from Abortion to Zelensky. No one in the world meets the exacting standards of this school of thought; any Leftie leader anywhere is always selling out to the bankers and the capitalists. The perfect exemplar of this is the unreadable Jacobin magazine.

The other day I came across this article from 2021. It's a celebration of trade union power. And not simply trade union power, but the use of trade union power to secure political goals. Of course (and this is always the case with the "more Leftie than thou" crowd), this glorious, never-to-be-forgotten moment on the history of organized labor took place many years ago--in the summer of 1974 to be exact. Yes, almost half a century has gone by since that thrilling moment when the working-class movement of Australia mobilized and prepared to seize the means of production, distribution and exchange.

Well, not quite. Organized labor went into action against...Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice; yes, Frank Sinatra. Why? What had Sinatra done? Sinatra was certainly very rich, and he owned a variety of properties and businesses. But if the Australian trade union movement were, understandably, searching for the bright, incandescent spark that would finally awaken the working class from its slumber there were surely richer, greedier, more dishonest, more decadent, above all more Australian individuals it could have discovered. Australia was never short of them. Rupert Murdoch immediately springs to mind. Why Sinatra?
